How to make Skype calls on Blackberry mobile phones

Use Skype on Blackberry mobile phones with IM+ Mobile Messenger In the same way like fring allows making Skype calls from Windows Mobile and Symbian phones, there is a similar program for Blackberry - IM+ Mobile Messenger. Like fring, IM+ Mobile Messenger can connect to your Skype account, and you will be able to make Skype calls from your Blackberry. But, unlike fring which is a free application, IM+ Mobile Messenger costs $ 30 (there is a 7-day trial period, so you can test it before paying money). IM+ Mobile Messenger works also under Windows Mobile, but the calling rates are higher compared to fring (see below).

What is needed to make Skype calls from Blackberry:

  1. If you don't yet have a Skype account
    2. download Skype and install it on your PC. You will be asked to create a free account during the installation.
  2. Buy Skype Credit. That will automatically create a SkypeOut account for you if you are buying for the first time.
  3. Download and install IM+ Mobile Messenger on your Blackberry.
  4. When you run IM+ Mobile Messenger for the first time, you will be asked to enter your Skype user name and password.

That's all - now you can call Skype users for free and regular phone numbers at amazingly low Skype rates!

Alternatively, you can subscribe to Rebtel. Rebtel's rates are lower than Skype's, unlike IM+ Mobile Messenger, you don't have to make a purchase, and there is no need to install software on your phone. So, if only Rebtel is available in your country, we definitely recommend it.


A few notes regarding the calling rates.
Unlike fring, IM+ Mobile Messenger is a callback program. That means that, when you dial a number through IM+ Mobile Messenger, their system will first call you back (that is why this method is called "callback"), and then the system will connect you to the number you dialed. As a result the cost of the call is a sum of two Skype calls - to the mobile number of your Blackberry and to your callee number. Accordingly, the cost is higher than in the case of fring, which dials your callee directly. But in many countries the Skype rates for mobile numbers are quite low, so that does not make a big difference. If Skype calls to mobile numbers in your country are not low, you can specify a landline number for the system to call you back. In that case the call will be only initiated from Blackberry but you will speak on a landline phone at respective Skype rates (that is also useful in international roaming where one has to pay for the incoming mobile calls). We would recommend using Rebtel if their service is available in your country because their calling rates are even lower than Skype rates.
