How To Go numbers work

Let’s say you’re based in the UK. You’ve got mum, dad and sis back home in New Zealand and do business with Japan. You’ve set your family up as speed dials, so you call your To Go access number from your mobile and listen to the calling menu. “To call Mum, press 1”. And you do. Because she loves you and you owe it to her. You’re then connected to the Skype ‘operator’ – not your mobile operator. When you need return a call to Tokyo, same deal – just tap in the number instead of hitting a speed dial – and Skype connects you faster than you can say “Moshi moshi”.

How much does it cost?

To Go calls are made up of three charges:

  • Your operator will charge you a standard fee to call your To Go number (if you’re calling from your mobile, the call may be free as part of your inclusive minutes).
  • The call to the person you’re connecting to overseas is charged at Skype rates from just 1.4 p per minute.
  • There is a small connection fee per call.
